Ways you can Help Rescue!

  Please Help Clara!!!!!!!!

My name is Clara and I need your help!  I was saved from a high kill shelter, my foster mom believes I was "thrown away" after I could no longer produce puppies.  How can I?  I have a huge mass on my mammary glands, vet said its from mastitis that went untreated and the infection turned into a mass of tumors, some show from the outside and are too icky to post pictures of.  I need a Mastectomy to make me all better.  I also have Entropion and require surgery for that as my right eye also has a cornea ulcer from my eyelashes rubbing it.

I'm the sweetest girl, a bit talkative, but I just crave love and attention!  I want to have my procedures so I can find a loving retirement home to live in.

Can you, Will you, help me???

Update:

Clara had her surgeries on Monday and she's recovering just fine!!!  Thank you to those who have contributed to her vet bill, but much more is still needed!!!!  Check back soon for pictures of Clara while she recovers!  Her vet bill is now well over $1,200.

Clara all healed from surgeries!

Clara was adopted on 2/26/10!  We are still accepting donations however as her vet bills where huge!

GIVE ME $5 FOR FOOD!

My name is Magnum and I have been elected as the official spokes Bully for the "Slaves To Our Stomach Club."  We cannot help it, every waking moment of every day we think about food, beg for food, conspire to steal food and when we sleep we dream of food!  As hard as they try our beloved rescuers cannot keep up with demand.  There are a lot of us that have spent many a night with an empty stomach and we are making up for lost time.  Page one, paragraph one of the Bullmastiff Manual specifically states " A true Bullmastiff will take every opportunity to eat, there is no shame in exhibiting pure unabashed gluttonous behavior in a public setting."  We take our manual very seriously.  PLEASE click on the paypal button below and give $5 to feed the bottomless pit we call our stomach!  If you can spare $10 we can get a big box of BISCUITS too!!  Our tummies thank you :)  WOOF!

The American Bullmastiff Association, ABA, is a National Organization with volunteers in almost every state!

The purpose of the American Bullmastiff Association Rescue Service is to find homes for unwanted Bullmastiffs that we find either in shelters or occasionally abandoned at vets or take in as owner surrenders from people whose lifestyle has changed. We are not a placement service for our members' unwanted or returned dogs.

We will accept owner surrenders from people who have purchased their dogs at pet shops or backyard breeders, but typically the dogs we place are of unknown origin and unknown age. All are spayed/neutered before they are placed, fully vaccinated, micro chipped and given the vet care they need so they can be represented as being in good health.

If you are interested in a dog you see available here, you must First complete an adoption application.

Online Adoption Application: http://bullmastiff-1.org/ABA/adoptap.php  If you don't hear back from us within a few days of submitting an application, please give us a call!!!

Surrendering your Bullmastiff

You can submit a Rescue Request online here: http://bullmastiff-1.com/ABA/surrenderform.htm

ABA can only take in pure bred bullmastiffs into our Rescue.

We do our best to do this in a timely manner, we must first have an opening in a foster home before we can take one.  You will be asked a series of questions and a picture of the dog emailed to us to make a proper ID is needed.

We strongly advise you contact your dogs breeder prior to contacting rescue.  Any reputable breeder will take back their dog no matter what the age or condition of the dog.  You will also be asked to provide us with your dogs vet records, and their history.

   Gita - CA

My name is Gita, I'm a lovely 4 yr old brindle female, spayed, chipped and UTD on shots.  My family surrendered me to the shelter because I could not get along with other dogs.  I'm great with people and kids (10 yrs and older) but I can be a bit shy at first.  As you can see, I'm in need of a diet which has already started, and some obedience training would be a great way for me to bond with my new family!

Adoption fee: $500

For more information, please put in an application http://bullmastiff-1.org/ABA/adoptap.php  and make a note that you are interested in Gita.

    Star - CA

My name is Star, I'm a lovely 6 yr old fawn female.  I'm chipped, UTD on shots and I will be spayed in mid Jan as I was in season when I came into rescue.  I'm okay with older children, 10 yrs and up, no cats, but I should be fine with a male dog around my size.  My foster mom will further test me soon now that I'm out of season.  I need some further obedience work, but with some love, I'll make you a loyal loving companion!

Adoption fee: $400

For more information, please put in an application http://bullmastiff-1.org/ABA/adoptap.php  and make a note that you are interested in Star.

    Bella - CA

Bella is about 5 yrs old, she is a spayed female. she had to come back to rescue due to no fault of her own, her owner had family matters that meant he could no longer keep her. She is very sweet, and loves to give HUGS, so no children under 10 yrs old. She is NOT good with other animals, male or female, so she must be an only dog. Although she is definitely dog aggressive, she is well behaved on a leash, and can be walked and taken to places like the vet. Bella is about 90 lbs, not a big girl but has a big heart! She is housebroken and crate trained. She does have medication for incontinence that she has to take daily. With the medication, she has no problems. If you are interested in Bella, please put in an application http://bullmastiff-1.org/ABA/adoptap.php  and make a note that you are interested in Bella.

The Meaning of Rescue
Author Unknown

Now that I'm home, bathed, settled, fed
All nicely tucked in my warm new bed.
I'd like to open my baggage
Lest I forget,
There is so much to carry --
So much to regret.
Hmm . . . Yes there it is, right on the top
Let's unpack Loneliness, Heartache and Loss,
And there by my leash hides Fear and Shame.
As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave --
I still have to unpack my baggage called Pain.
I loved them, the others, the ones who left me,
But I wasn't good enough -- for they didn't want me.

Will you add to my baggage?
Will you help me unpack?
Or will you just look at my things --
And take me right back?
Do you have the time to help me unpack?
To put away my baggage,
To never repack?
I pray that you do -- I'm so tired you see,
But I do come with baggage --
Will you still want me?

Dear Foster Mom
Author Unknown

DEAR FOSTER MOM:

There I sat, alone and afraid,
You got a call and came right to my aid.
You bundled me up with blankets and love,
And, when I needed it most, you gave me a hug.

I learned that the world was not all that scary and cold,
That sometimes there is someone to have and to hold.
You taught me what love is, you helped me to mend,
You loved me and healed me and became my first friend.

And just when I thought you'd done all you do,
There came along not one new lesson, but two.

First you said, "Sweetheart, you're ready to go,
I've done all I can, and you've learned all I know."
Then you bundled me up with a blanket and kiss,
Along came a new family, they even have kids!

They took me to their home, forever to stay,
At first I thought you sent me away.
Then that second lesson became perfectly clear,
No matter how far, you will always be near.

And so, Foster Mom, you know I've moved on,
I have a new home, with toys and a lawn.
But I'll never forget what I learned that first day,
You never really give your fosters away.

You gave me these thoughts to remember you by,
We may never meet again, and now I know why.
You'll remember I lived with you for a time,
I may not be yours, but you'll always be mine.

One By One

One by one, they pass by my cage,
Too old, too worn, too broken, no way.
Way past his time, he can't run and play.
Then they shake their heads slowly and go on their way.
A little old man, arthritic and sore,
It seems I am not wanted anymore.
I once had a home, I once had a bed,
A place that was warm, and where I was fed.
Now my muzzle is grey, and my eyes slowly fail.
Who wants a dog so old and so frail?
My family decided I didn't belong,
I got in their way, my attitude was wrong.
Whatever excuse they made in their head,
Can't justify how they left me for dead.
Now I sit in this cage, where day after day,
The younger dogs get adopted away.
When I had almost come to the end of my rope,
You saw my face, and I finally had hope.
You saw thru the grey, and the legs bent with age,
And felt I still had life beyond this cage.
You took me home, gave me food and a bed,
And shared your own pillow with my! poor tired head.
We snuggle and play, and you talk to me low,
You love me so dearly, you want me to know.
I may have lived most of my life with another,
But you outshine them with a love so much stronger.
And I promise to return all the love I can give,
To you, my dear person, as long as I live.
I may be with you for a week, or for years,
We will share many smiles, you will no doubt shed tears.
And when the time comes that God deems I must leave,
I know you will cry and your heart, it will grieve.
And when I arrive at the Bridge, all brand new,
My thoughts and my heart will still be with you.
And I will brag to all who will hear,
Of the person who made my last days so dear.

How Could You

Written By: Jim Willis

When I was a puppy, I entertained you with my antics and made you
laugh. You called me your child, and despite a number of chewed
shoes and a couple of murdered throw pillows, I became your best
friend.

Whenever I was "bad," you'd shake your finger at me and ask "How
could you?" -- but then you'd relent and roll me over for a belly
rub.

My housebreaking took a little longer than expected, because you
were terribly busy, but we worked on that together. I remember those
nights of nuzzling you in bed and listening to your confidences and
secret dreams, and I believed that life could not be any more
perfect.

We went for long walks and runs in the park, car rides, stops for
ice cream (I only got the cone because "ice cream is bad for dogs"
you said), and I took long naps in the sun waiting for you to come
home at the end of the day.

Gradually, you began spending more time at work and on your career,
and more time searching for a human mate. I waited for you
patiently, comforted you through heartbreaks and disappointments,
never chided you about bad decisions, and romped with glee at your
homecomings, and when you fell in love.

She, now your wife, is not a "dog person" -- still I welcomed her
into our home, tried to show her affection, and obeyed her. I was
happy because you were happy.

Then the human babies came along and I shared your excitement. I was
fascinated by their pinkness, how they smelled, and I wanted to
mother them, too. Only she and you worried that I might hurt them,
and I spent most of my time banished to another room, or to a dog
crate. Oh, how I wanted to love them, but I became a prisoner.

As they began to grow, I became their friend. They clung to my fur
and pulled themselves up on wobbly legs, poked fingers in my eyes,
investigated my ears, and gave me kisses on my nose. I loved
everything about them and their touch -- because your touch was now
so infrequent -- and I would've defended them with my life if need
be. I would sneak into their beds and listen to their worries and
secret dreams, and together we waited for the sound of your car in
the driveway.

There had been a time, when others asked you if you had a dog, that
you produced a photo of me from your wallet and told them stories
about me. These past few years, you just answered "yes" and changed
the subject. I had gone from being "your dog" to "just a dog," and
you resented every expenditure on my behalf.

Now, you have a new career opportunity in another city, and you and
they will be moving to an apartment that does not allow pets. You've
made the right decision for your "family," but there was a time when
I was your only family.

I was excited about the car ride until we arrived at the animal
shelter. It smelled of dogs and cats, of fear, of hopelessness. You
filled out the paperwork and said "I know you will find a good home
for her." They shrugged and gave you a pained look. They understand
the realities facing a middle-aged dog, even one with "papers."

You had to pry your son's fingers loose from my collar as he
screamed, "No, Daddy! Please don't let them take my dog!" And I
worried for him, and what lessons you had just taught him about
friendship and loyalty, about love and responsibility, and about
respect for all life.

You gave me a good-bye pat on the head, avoided my eyes, and
politely refused to take my collar and leash with you. You had a
deadline to meet and now I have one, too. After you left, the two
nice ladies said you probably knew about your upcoming move months
ago and made no attempt to find me another good home. They shook
their heads and asked "How could you?"

They are as attentive to us here in the shelter as their busy
schedules allow. They feed us, of course, but I lost my appetite
days ago.

At first, whenever anyone passed my pen, I rushed to the front,
hoping it was you that you had changed your mind -- that this was
all a bad dream... or I hoped it would at least be someone who
cared, anyone who might save me.

When I realized I could not compete with the frolicking for
attention of happy puppies, oblivious to their own fate, I retreated
to a far corner and waited. I heard her footsteps as she came for me
at the end of the day, and I padded along the aisle after her to a
separate room. A blissfully quiet room.

She placed me on the table and rubbed my ears, and told me not to
worry. My heart pounded in anticipation of what was to come, but
there was also a sense of relief. The prisoner of love had run out
of days.

As is my nature, I was more concerned about her. The burden which
she bears weighs heavily on her, and I know that, the same way I
knew your every mood.

She gently placed a tourniquet around my foreleg as a tear ran down
her cheek. I licked her hand in the same way I used to comfort you
so many years ago.

She expertly slid the hypodermic needle into my vein. As I felt the
sting and the cool liquid coursing through my body, I lay down
sleepily, looked into her kind eyes and murmured "How could you?"

Perhaps because she understood my dogspeak, she said "I'm so sorry."
She hugged me, and hurriedly explained it was her job to make sure I
went to a better place, where I wouldn't be ignored or abused or
abandoned, or have to fend for myself --a place of love and light so
very different from this earthly place.

And with my last bit of energy, I tried to convey to her with a
thump of my tail that my "How could you?" was not directed at her.
It was directed at you, My Beloved Master, I was thinking of you. I
will think of you and wait for you forever. May everyone in your
life continue to show you so much loyalty as I did.

Big dogs need love, too
By Taylor Ashley Alfonso, Correspondent

• Video: Big dogs need love, too

Duke is a 3-year-old sweet-natured bullmastiff with short red fur and dark eyes. And Duke is looking for love. Duke's family could no longer take care of him, so they gave him up. But don't worry. He is in the loving hands of Deborah Abel of Covina, the California rescue coordinator for the American Bullmastiff Association. She dedicates herself to placing neglected, abandoned, and abused bullmastiffs into lasting homes. And she'll find Duke a loving owner.

It is not an easy job placing homeless animals. Imagine how difficult it would be to find a home for a 130-pound dog that burps and drools and tends to get chronic ear infections. Veterinarian and food bills would be far higher than the costs of, say, a cocker spaniel.

Changes in families such as divorce and pregnancy often result in deserted dogs or "owner surrenders," said Abel, 34. She says there have been more abandoned bullmastiffs in the last few years than ever before; this year alone, Abel has placed about 20 dogs in new homes.

Abel and her husband Eric Abel provide foster care for neglected bullmastiffs out of their Covina home. They know of only two other temporary homes for these dogs in California.

In addition to Duke, a 3-year-old brindle female named Little (who is not so little) is available for adoption. There are nine dogs in all listed on the Abels' Web rescue site, mysticalbullmastiffs.com.

They have arranged foster homes for most of these dogs when they run out of space at their own house. Abel said she has 10 applications from prospective adopters, and of that number, maybe three will ultimately take on a dog.

"When I pick a dog up from a shelter, I promise them that their next home will be their last home," Abel said. "I go with my gut when I choose a family for the dog. I turn a lot of families away."

The adoption process for rescued animals sometimes takes three to four months to complete because Abel wants to make sure the dog will go into the right home.

"But I have to be realistic," Abel said. "I only have so much room and volunteers."

The bullmastiff breed, a combination of the bulldog and mastiff, was developed in the mid-19th century to protect game on wealthy English estates, according to the American Kennel Club. Depending on the gender, bullmastiffs range from 100-130 pounds. They have short coats, dark eyes, and a dark mouth.  Routine vet bills range from $500 to $700 a year; more if they require medical attention.

"They are an expensive breed to have," Abel said. "Bullmastiffs are big dogs, and they drool, burp, fart, and get ear infections."

Despite their powerful build, these dogs don't require a lot of space.

"People think they need a huge back yard for them," said Abel, "But as long as they get walked three times a day, a bullmastiff can live in an apartment."

Bullmastiffs are, "fearless and confident, yet docile," according to the AKC Web site. "The dog combines the reliability, intelligence, and willingness to please required in a dependable family companion and protector."

Deborah Abel says that she has always been a "rescuer" at heart. As a child, she brought home many wounded and stray animals, including a crow.

She showers her rescued dogs with affection. She gives them hugs and pats and allows the dogs to lick her face.

"Rescues make the best companions," Abel said. "They have been neglected and they just want to be loved."

Each rescued dog is spayed, neutered, vaccinated, and micro shipped before they are adopted. Although the ABA covers veterinary fees, all other expenses come out of the Abel family's pocket.

When people offer to help, Abel asks for money for gas. As the only rescue coordinator for bullmastiffs in California, Abel transports dogs throughout the state and even to other states, like Arizona, to adoptive families.

She also needs volunteers to help her with phone calls, checking references of applicants, making house visits, and transporting dogs. Abel also relies on donations of crates, blankets, food and toys.

When Abel and other members of the ABA Rescue Services come upon difficult times, they remind themselves of the group motto: "It's all for the dogs."

Abel's Web site states: "Saving one dog may not change the world but the world has surely changed for that one dog."

Rescue Questions & Answers

This section is new, I will be adding to it as the questions come in.

* What does the Adoption Fee Cover??

Your adopted bullmastiff comes to you fully vaccinated, micro chipped, spayed or neutered, is free of internal parasites, and has been checked by a veterinarian. Any medical condition that is diagnosed by our veterinarians is treated prior to adoption.

* How does the process work??

The first step is to complete the adoption application. You can complete it online at:
http://bullmastiff-1.com/ABA/rescueapp.htm

After we receive your application, we will review it and contact you about any dog we have that is a potential match for you. Please keep in mind that not every dog is a good candidate for every home, nor are there “perfect” dogs. Most rescues come to us with some sort of issue, whether physical or psychological. We will, of course, discuss all issues with you to help make the perfect match!

After a potential match is found, you will be invited to visit the dog where he is being fostered. If all goes well, we will do a home inspection, call your references, and move forward with the adoption. (Sometimes home inspections are done prior to you meeting any dogs. It depends on the volunteers’ availability)

* Why do the dogs have to be spayed/neutered, I want mine intact.

ALL Rescues are spayed or neutered to prevent them from reproducing. Placing the dogs intact would defeat the purpose of rescue! The overwhelming majority of our dogs come to us with no registration history, health history, etc. Such dogs should never be bred. Responsible breeders know their dogs' lineage for many generations back, and do their best to avoid genetic health issues and defects. Breeding a dog with unknown origin is irresponsible!

* Why won't you hold a dog for me??

I'm not ready to bring him home until next month!

We have tried this on several occasions only to have the "adopter" change their mind and the dog miss out on a great home elsewhere. This is not fair to the dog, nor to us or the other dogs waiting to come in.  For this reason, we will not "hold" a dog for you.  (This of course does not apply to situations where travel arrangements are being made in order to get a dog a few hundred miles away)

*Why won't you place a male bullmastiff in a home

that already has a male dog in it?

Dog aggression in the bullmastiff varies according to the individual, but it is wise to remember that there is bulldog in its lineage. The bulldog was primarily a fighting dog.

Dog aggression is more common between dogs of the same sex, and is most prevalent between males. Spaying and neutering can help, but we do not consider it safe to adopt male bullmastiffs to families that already have a male dog. The potential for dog aggression is too strong, and because of his size and nature, the male bullmastiff can do considerable damage to an adversary. Please understand that if you already have a male dog in your home, you may only adopt a female bullmastiff. Adopting a male is out of the question.

* Why do most of the females have saggy teats?

I'd say a good 85% of the females that come into rescue, do so because they are no longer useful to back yard breeders. These people breed for the sole purpose of making money. We rescue many females that have been used as nothing but a puppy factory.

* Why are some dogs listed as children 10 yrs and older?  Are they vicious??

NO! If we do not know a dog’s history, we add this requirement for safety purposes. Most shelter dogs are fine with children, but it’s a risk we won't take.

* When you say no other dogs, does this mean I can't take

my new Rescue for a walk even??

Dog aggression can be a factor with the bullmastiff. Some exhibit no aggression at all. Some get along just fine with other dogs outside their home environment, but are possessive of their own home, people and belongings. Many will not tolerate dogs of the same sex. Others will not tolerate other dogs under any circumstances, so caution is of paramount importance. Your dog’s foster parents will tell you which level of dog aggression your new rescue has exhibited.

* Why won't you take a dog that has shown human aggression??

A dog that has shown human aggression is a walking liability. We cannot accept such a dog because he may injure us, our family members, or our vets. If that were to happen, the person who surrendered the dog to us would be liable!
We also consider the safety of our adopters extremely important, and will not knowingly adopt out a dog that has shown any aggression toward a human.

* What competitions can I do with my rescue??

You can get an ILP (Indefinite Listing Privilege) number for your dog, and compete in Rally Obedience. You can work toward CGC (Canine Good Citizen) standing, and participate in many other rewarding activities! To get an ILP Form, go to: http://www.akc.org/reg/ilpex.cfm or email us and we'll send you one!

* Can I change my dogs name after adoption??

Absolutely!  Sometimes rescues come to us with a name, other times we give them one ourselves.

I'm a firm believer in "new name, new life"!!!

*  Why do you recommend obedience training??

Most rescues are in need of some obedience training. Some more than others.
Since taking an obedience class with your newly adopted companion is such a wonderful bonding experience, I recommend that everyone attend a course with their dog.

* Do you Rescue other breeds such as Neapolitan Mastiffs,

English Mastiffs, Pit Bulls, Mixes, etc???

No, we do not. We only rescue purebred bullmastiffs. We have provided links to a few other mastiff breed rescues on this page. If your breed is not listed, we recommend that you search for that breed’s rescue group. If the breed rescue is not located near you, contact them anyway. They may have a volunteer closer to you than you think! Usually only coordinators have their contact info posted on rescue sites. Volunteers often are spread far and wide.
